Summary

The cropmarks of a possible oval or circular ring ditch, potentially relating to a late Neolithic and/or Bronze Age barrow, may be visible on aerial photographs. The archaeological origin of this cropmark is uncertain and it may relate to underlying geological factors. However given the context of the possible site in close proximity to a number of other more convincing ring ditches and late Neolithic to Bronze Age barrows (NHER 9592, 52302, 52331 & 52334), it is worth recording these cropmarks as another possible barrow site. Although given the uncertainty over the archaeological origin of the cropmarks, this interpretation must be applied with a degree of caution.

Map

July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible circular or oval ring ditch, potentially relating to a late Neolithic and/or Bronze Age barrow, may be visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 2420 0610. The archaeological origin of this cropmark is uncertain and it may relate to underlying geological factors. A variety of curvilinear geological marks are apparent in this general area on some of the oblique aerial photographs, but not appear to directly correspond with that cropmarks mapped. The possible oval or circular ring ditch is only clearly distinguishable on (S1), but may also be visible on (S2), although this is not certain as few of the cropmarks on this 1929 aerial photograph can be interpreted as archaeological with any confidence. Given the context of the possible site in close proximity to a number of other more convincing ring ditches and late Neolithic to Bronze Age barrows (NHER 9592, 52302, 52331 & 52334), it is worth recording these cropmarks as another possible barrow site. Although given the uncertainty over the archaeological origin of the cropmarks, this interpretation must be applied with a degree of caution.
