Full Description
March 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of a horse ménage.
A post-medieval well and various wall foundations were recorded over the northern half of the excavated area. The large bricks used for construction could be medieval 'great bricks' but the fact that they are more than 2 inches in thickness could suggest an 18th century date for the structures. These structures are not shown on a detailed 17th century map of Langley Abbey and green area and were probably demolished before the 1830's as they are not shown on the tithe map (1836-1850) or 1st edition ordnance survey map (1824-1836) (S1). The majority of finds recovered from the site support the structural evidence for post-medieval activity within this area.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
S. Howard (NLA), 16 July 2010.
July 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of extension to existing ménage at Langley Abbey.
The soil stripping did not penetrate beneath the subsoil layer and as a result no archaeologically significant features were observed. Apart from a single sherd of medieval pottery the finds recovered were predominantly of 19th- and early-mid 20th-century date.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 November 2016.
