Map

July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Possible field boundaries are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2) on land to the south of Norwich Road, Hethersett.
They are centred on TG 1794 0516, and consist of several ditches at right angles to each other, as well as at least two banks which appear to surround a possible pit at TG 1803 0521. At least one of the ditches, towards the south west of the site, appears to be on the same orientation as the possible prehistoric field boundaries 824m to the north east (NHER 54404).
E. Bales (NMP), 20 July 2010.

March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction.
The area examined coincided with the group of cropmarks recorded at TG 1800 0521. A number of linear anomalies were identified in this part of the site, including several that appear to correspond with the mapped cropmarks.
A group of east-to-west and north-to-south aligned linear anomalies identified to the north-west potentially represent features related to the similarly-aligned cropmarks mapped to the south at TG17880523.
See report (S3) and NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2021.

July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction.
This phase of work saw further investigation of the group of cropmarks mapped at TG 1800 0521, with all of the cropmarks examined found to be associated with surviving sub-surface remains. Although no dating evidence was recovered from these particular features, medieval pottery was found in two nearby ditches and it reasonably likely that most, if not all, of the ditches exposed in this field were associated with medieval to post-medieval phases of activity.
Although several trenches were also excavated close to the north-west to south-east aligned cropmark mapped at TG 1800 0506 it appears that none actually coincided with this feature.
See report (S4) and NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2021.

November-December 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction.
This second phase of geophysical survey saw the examination of an area that coincided with the north-west to south-east aligned cropmark mapped at TG 1800 0506. No corresponding anomalies were identified.
See NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2021.

October 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land adjacent to Thickthorn Park and Ride.
This survey identified a small number of potentially archaeologically-significant linear anomalies, including a north-west to south-east aligned response that potentially corresponds with one of the cropmarks in this group.
See report (S5) and NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 January 2024.

January 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land adjacent to Thickthorn Park and Ride.
An adjacent pair of north-north-east to south-south-west and west-north to south-east aligned ditches clearly related to two of the linear cropmarks in this group, although unfortunately neither produced any dating evidence.
See report (S6) and NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 January 2024.
