Summary

A semi-circular feature is visible as a grassmark on aerial photographs to the west of Newfound Farm, Colney Lane, Cringleford. This was initially interpreted as a possible ring-ditch but subsequent archaeological investigations have demonstrated that it was associated with a group of post-medieval kilns and associated features.

Map

July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A fragment of a possible ring ditch with internal bank feature is visible as a grassmark on aerial photographs (S1-S2) to the west of Newfound Farm, Colney Lane, Cringleford. The semi-circular ditch feature is centred on TG 1863 0689, and measures 32m in external diameter. A possible internal bank feature is visible as a negative grassmark within the ditch.
The slightly erratic nature of the feature, and the fact that it is close to the field edge, may suggest that it is agricultural rather than archaeological in nature, and it has thus been recorded with a note of caution.
E. Bales (NMP), 20 July 2010.

January 2011. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of large proposed development area.
This survey identified several strong dipolar anomalies in this field, one of which would appear to correspond with these cropmarks. These anomlies were intepreted as probably representing the remains of post-medieval pottery kilns.
See report (S3) and NHER 63104 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2018.

April 2013. Trial Trenching.
Partial evaluation of large proposed development area.
A trench excavated at this site revealed several post-medieval kilns and a number of associated large pits. It is highly likely that the cropmarks recorded at this location were associated with one of these groups of features.
See report (S4) and NHER 63104 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2018.
