Summary

In 2010 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. This produced a small number of Roman, medieval, late medieval/early post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds. The bulk of the pottery recovered was though late post-medieval/modern and it is likely that the majority of the other objects found were of a similarly recent date. Potential exceptions include a single possible prehistoric worked flint flake and several pieces of possible iron slag.

Map

July 2010. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/10/03) was located at [1] and did not reach natural geological deposits – excavation being halted at a depth of 0.70m due to time constraints. Finds recovered included:
4 Roman pottery sherds.
7 medieval pottery sherds.
1 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd.
4 post-medieval pottery sherds and 2 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
28 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include a possible prehistoric worked flint flake, 6 burnt stone, 3 flat tile fragments, a glazed flat tile fragment, 47 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, 3 slate fragments, 11 glass bottle/container fragments, a possible chain link, a small rounded metal object (like a thimble), an iron bolt, 8 corroded iron scraps and 4 pieces of possible iron slag.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
