Summary

In 2010 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. This produced a small number of Roman, late medieval/early post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds and a single possible prehistoric worked flint. The bulk of the pottery recovered was though late post-medieval/modern and it is likely that the majority of the other objects found were of a similarly recent date.

Map

July 2010. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/10/04) was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.8m. Finds recovered included:
2 Roman pottery sherds.
1 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd.
7 post-medieval pottery sherds.
18 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include a possible prehistoric worked flint, 3 flat tile fragments, 1 curved tile fragment, 12 unidentified ceramic building fragments, a slate fragment, pieces of bottle, container and window glass, a button, 2 iron bolts, 5 iron nails, 4 corroded iron scraps, an iron strip, a corroded iron lump and an oyster shell.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
