Summary

In 2010 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. The more notable finds included a small number of medieval, late medieval/early post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds and a post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragment. The bulk of the pottery recovered was though late post-medieval/modern and it is likely that the majority of the other objects found were of a similarly recent date.

July 2010. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/10/07) was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.50m. Finds recovered included:
1 medieval pottery sherd.
1 late medieval/post-medieval pottery sherd.
2 post-medieval pottery sherds and a clay tobacco pipe stem fragment.
20 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 39 ceramic building material fragments, pieces of glass, a piece of scrap iron and 3 burnt stones.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
