Summary

In 2010 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. The more notable finds included two possible prehistoric worked flints, a small number late medieval/early post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds and iron slag. The origin of these finds is though uncertain as the original topsoil at this location was apparently removed during the 1930s.

Map

July 2010. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/10/09) was located at [1] and did not reach natural geological deposits – excavation being halted at a depth of 0.50m due to time constraints. Finds recovered included:
4 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherds.
1 post-medieval pottery sherd.
9 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 2 possible prehistoric worked flints, 3 burnt stones, 2 flat tile fragments, 7 ceramic building material fragments, a slate fragment, pieces of bottle, container and window glass, 3 iron nails, 8 corroded iron scraps, 2 corroded iron lumps and 26 pieces of iron slag.
It should be noted that the topsoil at this location was apparently removed by the local quarry company when the current house was being built, so the present soils must represent material brought in from elsewhere. The source of the finds recovered is therefore uncertain.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2).
