Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/10/10) was located at [1] and did not reach natural geological deposits – excavation being halted at a depth of 0.50m due to time constraints. Finds recovered included:
12 Roman pottery sherds.
6 medieval pottery sherds.
2 post-medieval pottery sherds.
1 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherd.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 2 possible prehistoric worked flints, 3 burnt stones, 2 flat tile fragments, 7 ceramic building material fragments, a slate fragment, pieces of bottle, container and window glass, 3 iron nails, 8 corroded iron scraps, 2 corroded iron lumps and 26 pieces of iron slag.
