Full Description
September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of enclosures and/or fields of unknown but possible Roman date are visible on aerial photographs in the area of Brickfield Farm, Costessey (S1). The site is centred on TG 1607 1238 and the cropmarks would appear bear no relationship to the site of the former brick works (NHER 12393) at this location. The site consists of fragmentary rectilinear enclosures and ditches, the majority of which appear to pre-date the medieval to post medieval field pattern in this area. The ditches and possible enclosures and/or fields do share the same alignment as another group of cropmark enclosures and fields to the west (NHER 11744). The date of these cropmarks is uncertain, although a Roman date was considered a possibility although there are currently no known finds of this date in the immediate vicinity to corroborate this interpretation.
S. Horlock (NMP), 07 September 2010.
