Summary

The cropmarks of a sub-rectangular enclosure or field of probable post-medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Black Hill Wood, Costessey. The location of the cropmarks has since been quarried, although it is possible that the south-eastern corner survives. This possible enclosure follows the same alignment as the post-medieval field boundary to the immediate south depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch). It is therefore possible that these cropmarks merely represent a demarcated area or paddock within a post-medieval field. Although it is also feasible that it represents an enclosure of earlier date.
