Full Description
September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a sub-rectangular enclosure and/or field of probable post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Black Hill Wood, Costessey (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 1519 1244. The location of the cropmarks has since been quarried, although it is possible that the south-eastern corner survives. This possible enclosure follows the same alignment as the post medieval field boundary to the immediate south depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch) (S3). It is therefore possible that these cropmarks merely represent a demarcated area or paddock within a post medieval field. Although it is also feasible that it represents an enclosure of earlier date.
S. Horlock (NMP), 07 September 2010.
