Summary

The cropmarks of trackways and possible field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of the former Brick Farm site, Costessey. These trackways were previously recorded under NHER 11744, see record for details. The Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch) shows a curving trackway running from Brick Farm towards Brickfield Farm to the northeast. A double ditched linear is visible running along this course on the aerial photographs. To the north of this following a similar course is another cropmark trackway and probable field boundary. Given the relationship with the First Edition mapping it seems most likely that these features are post medieval, or medieval to post medieval, in date. It seems likely that these tracks and boundaries relate to a layout that pre-dates the more regular field boundaries in this area.

The Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch) (S5) shows a curving trackway running from Brick Farm towards Brickfield Farm to the northeast. A double ditched linear is visible running along this course on the aerial photographs (S1-S4). To the north of this following a similar course is another cropmark trackway and probable field boundary. Given the relationship with the First Edition mapping it seems most likely that these features are post medieval, or medieval to post medieval, in date. No earlier historical maps were available at the time of mapping, although it seems likely that these tracks and boundaries relate to a layout that pre-dates the more regular field boundaries in this area.
