Summary

Former earthworks and vegetation marks of probable medieval enclosures are visible on aerial photographs on recreation ground to the north of Costessey Park. The site consists of shallow earthworks and vegetation marks indicating a rectilinear enclosure with internal subdivisions and associated ditches around the outside. While it is possible that these features relate a former medieval homestead or domestic enclosure, it is also feasible that it represents agricultural paddocks and animal enclosures. It is likely that these earthworks pre-date the establishment of Costessey Park, see NHER 7913 and 12394 for details of Costessey Hall and Park House. See records NHER 54489 for details of medieval to post medieval earthworks within the area of the Park, the majority of which are likely to relate to former park boundaries and paths.

September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Former earthworks and vegetation marks of probable medieval enclosures are visible on aerial photographs on recreation ground to the north of Costessey Park (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 1678 1145. The site consists of shallow earthworks and vegetation marks indicating a rectilinear enclosure with internal subdivisions and associated ditches around the outside. While it is possible that these features relate a former medieval homestead or domestic enclosure, it is also feasible that it represents agricultural paddocks and animal enclosures. It is likely that these earthworks pre-date the establishment of Costessey Park, see NHER 7913 and 12394 for details of Costessey Hall and Park House. More recent photography of the site (S4) indicates that the low earthworks are now levelled.
