Summary

Aerial imagery shows circular cropmarks at this location. These were initially interpreted as representing a double-concentric ring-ditch, but it is now though they are potentially geological in origin.

Civil Parish NORTH WALSHAM, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

September 2006.
Aerial photographs show a double concentric ring ditch located on same site as multi-period metal finds (NHER 40666).
See (S1).
D. Lefeuvre (NLA), 4 October 2010.

Aerial imagery of a similar date to that noted above (S2) doesn’t appear to show anything of potential archaeological interest at the original mapped location of this record (centred TG 2707 3042). A circular cropmark that is potentially what was regarded as a double-concentric ring-ditch can though be seen nearby, at TG 2706 3046, alternatively it may have been a reference to a much larger circular cropmark further north (centred at TG 2709 3050). The record has been remapped to reflect the position of these features, although it should be noted that neither is particularly convincing as an archaeological feature. On later aerial imagery such as (S3) they look much more geological.
Due to the above the mapped location of this record has been corrected [1].
P. Watkins (HES), 4 January 2025.

October 2022-February 2023. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large potential development site.
This survey identified nothing that could be interpreted as the remains of a ring-ditch, either at the original position of this record or its new, corrected location. This would seem to support the suggestion that the marks observed are geological in origin, particularly as a ring-ditch seen in the field to the east (NHER 69663) was associated with a reasonably distinct geophysical anomaly.
See report (S4) and NHER 69647 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 January 2025.
