Summary

The cropmarks of an area of enclosures and fields of probable Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Easton village. The site consists of a main concentration of enclosures and ditches, surrounded by more fragmentary and dispersed boundaries. The vast majority of the boundaries appear to follow a broadly follow a dominant alignment, although it is possible that the site represents domestic and agricultural enclosures and fields of more than one phase. Finds of a Prehistoric and Roman date have been found within the general vicinity (NHER 15898, 19755, 20010-1). Given the morphology of the cropmarks a Roman date for the site seems the most plausible.

Map

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of an area of enclosures and fields of probable Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Easton village (S1-S5). The site is centred on TG 1240 1062. The site consists of a main concentration of enclosures and ditches centred on TG 1247 1069; away from this focal point the ditches become more fragmentary and dispersed. An outlier group of ditches to the north (S1) were included within this site due to the shared orientation. Although the fragmentary nature of the ditches makes it hard to record definite dimensions, an enclosure approximately 58m by 66m may be present at TG 1241 1058, potentially bordering a trackway (S1). The enclosures visible to the north are more characteristically elongated and rectangular, measuring approximately 40m by 20m (S5).
S. Horlock (NMP), 08 June 2010.

September 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site to east of Blind Lane.
Although the area examined coincided with a number of cropmarks in the western half of this group there was no evidence for associated sub-surface remains.
See NHER 67151 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 July 2023.

October 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to east of Blind Lane.
Although a number of the excavated trenches coincided with cropmarks in this group none were found to be associated with surviving sub-surface remains. A number of similarly-aligned ditches were recorded elsewhere across the site but the majority produced little or no dating evidence. The lack of Roman or later finds was though notable and it is suggested that many of these ditches were potentially associated with a field system of prehistoric date.
See report (S6) and NHER 67151 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 July 2023.

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works.
Although the areas examined coincided with a number of the cropmarks in this group there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See NHERs 65212 and 65215 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2022.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works.
The excavated trenches coincided with a number of the cropmarks in this group but there was again no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See report (S7) and NHERs 65212, 65213 and 65215 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2022.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
A single cropmark in this group fell within the area examined – a north-east to south-west aligned feature at TG 1268 1044. There was no evidence for associated sub-surface remains.
See NHER 66334 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 July 2023.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
This phase of work saw further investigation of the north-east to south-west aligned cropmark at TG 1268 1044. There was again no evidence for associated remains.
See NHER 66334 for further details.
