Full Description
This site was previously recorded under NHER 5092.
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible Neolithic long barrow or mortuary enclosure are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Upper Stoke (S1-S4). The site is centred on TG 2481 0246. The sub-rectangular or oval enclosure measures 25m by 12m. Although this would be small for this type of Neolithic monuement by national standards, this size sits well within the range of other probable monuments of this type within Norfolk. A Neolithic axehead has been recovered from within 425m of the site (NHER 19220). A probable Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 53339) was potentially constructed alongside this monument, potentially slighting the ditch of the earlier Neolithic monument.
S. Horlock (NMP), 23 March 2009.
