March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of boundary ditches and field boundaries of possible Roman date to either side of the Roman road (NHER 30288) running from Caistor Roman town to the northwest towards Stoke Holy Cross to the southeast, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The site is centred on TG 2489 0249. The site consists of a series of fragmentary ditches and boundaries running either parallel or perpendicular to the line of the Roman road (NHER 30288) and are assumed to be broadly contemporary and Roman in date. An oblong parchmark, 18m by 7m, at TG 2492 0254 (S4) could potentially represent the remains of a contemporary building or surface. Within the southeastern area of the site, centred on TG 2504 0236, is a probable area of enclosures and/or fields. Roman date finds have been recovered from general vicinity of the cropmarks (NHER 5092 & 41093) and the site is located approximately 575m to the north of the Stoke Holy Cross villa complex (NHER 9732 & 43199).
