March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a dispersed group of fragmentary, undated and multi-phase cropmarks, represent the remains of former field boundaries ditches and trackway sections, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5) to the south of the Roman road (NHER 30288) running from Caistor Roman town towards Stoke Holy Cross. The site is centred on TG 2486 0251. Additional cropmarks recorded within this area that would appear to represent distinct phases or coherent groups of features have been recorded separately, see NHER 52322 for boundaries and fields contemporary with the Roman road and NHER 53343 for rectangular enclosure and associated fields of possible Iron Age date. This site consists of fragmentary ditches boundaries, some of which are likely to have formed enclosures and fields, such as those centred on TG 2468 0255 (S2, S4) and represent several phases of activity potentially ranging in date from the later prehistoric to the Roman period. Although some of the curvilinear boundaries recorded within the area of TG 2498 0236 may be medieval to post medieval in date (S1). Finds of Roman and post medieval date have been found within the vicinity of the site (NHER 5092 & 41093). A possible ring ditch at TG 2495 0239 (S4) is of uncertain origin and could relate to underlying geology, although the nearby presence of a more convincing ring ditch must be noted (NHER 53339).
