Full Description
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and cropmarks of medieval to post medieval enclosures, boundaries and trackways are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5). These are probably associated with medieval settlement earthworks to the immediate southeast (9769). The site is centred on TG 2421 0221. This site consists of a large area of earthwork and cropmarks relating to enclosures, boundaries and trackways of probable medieval date, although some components are likely to relate to later post medieval boundaries, some of which are marked on the 1844 Stoke Holy Cross Tithe Map (S6). The main medieval components of this site are aligned NW-SE or SW-NE and clearly underlie the post medieval field pattern in this area. A concentration of these tracks and a small polygonal enclosure, probably a stock enclosure, are centred on TG 2397 0221 and survive as earthworks as late as 1940s (S1). This area is depicted as woodland or rough scrub on the 1844 Stoke Holy Cross Tithe Map (S6). This area of earthworks is cut through by a track of probable post medieval date. Additional fragmentary cropmarks defining boundaries and enclosures following the same alignment are visible on aerial photographs to the east at TG 2434 0231 and these are also likely to represent medieval date fields and stock enclosures.
