Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of two square enclosures and/or building platforms of probable medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs to the northwest of Blackford Hall, Stoke Holy Cross (S1). The site is centred on TG 2481 0188. Both enclosures are approximately 10m across and defined by low and slightly irregular banks, 1-2m wide (S1). It seems likely that these either enclosed or defined the extent of two small buildings. The function of these is not certain, although it is possible that they relate to some sort of small-scale industrial activity and could be associated with extraction areas, platforms and channels recorded in this area under NHER 52238. One possibility given the proximity of probable clay extraction pits, is that they could feasible relate to small-scale brick production and could therefore represent the base for kilns or similar structures. These earthworks are located approximately 300m from the medieval moated site of Blackford Hall (NHER 9908) and it is feasible that these buildings and any associated small-scale industrial activity could be associated with supplying the requirements of this medieval household and its land.
