Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary enclosures and field boundaries of unknown, but possible Iron Age to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs. Some of these features are broadly parallel with the Roman Pye road (NHER 7947 and 52170) and may also be of Roman date. Excavations to the north of these cropmarks revealed ditches of Iron Age, Roman and Early Saxon date (NHER 31821).

The cropmarks of fragmentary enclosures and field boundaries of unknown, but possible Iron Age to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 2231 0157. Some of these features are broadly parallel with the Roman Pye road (NHER 7947 and 52170) and may also be of Roman date. Excavations to the north of these cropmarks revealed ditches of Iron Age, Roman and Early Saxon date (NHER 31821).

February 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site to north of Stoke Lane (TG 2226 0150).
The area examined coincided with several of the westernmost cropmarks in this group. There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.

January 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to north of Stoke Lane (TG 2226 0150).
The trenches excavated coincided with several of the westernmost cropmarks in this group. There was again no evidence for associated features.
