Full Description
June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The faint cropmarks of the fragments of a probable field system of unknown, but possible medieval to post-medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Wood Farm, Honingham (S1). The site is centred on TG 1014 1328. The cropmarks are likely to relate to underlying enclosures and/or fields that could feasibly be broadly medieval to post-medieval in date as some of the cropmarks are parallel and perpendicular to the some aspects of the surrounding post-medieval and modern landscape. However no boundaries corresponding to the cropmarks are depicted on the 1839 Tithe map (S2).
S. Horlock (NMP), 8 June 2010.
November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link.
This survey identified a dense cluster of linear anomalies within this field, although none can be directly associated with the individual cropmarks in this group. They can though be seen to coincide with the main cluster of geophysical anomalies and their recorded alignments are broadly comparable.
See report (S3) and NHER 66617 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 May 2024.
May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link.
This work demonstrated that the remains identified by the preceding geophysical survey were mostly of medieval date but there was again no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains at the mapped locations of these cropmarks (despite this work revealing many additional linear features).
See report (S4) and NHER 66617 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 May 2024.
