Map

October 2010. Norfolk NMP.
At least two linear banks together with one v-shaped ditch are visible as earthworks, cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S2-S10) on land to the east of The Street, Croxton.
The longest bank runs from TL 8731 8712 to TL 8784 8762, in three fragmentary sections, those to the northeast visible as broad, blurred soilmarks, and that in the southwest being visible as a slight earthwork. These marks may, however be geological in nature rather than archaeological.
A second possible bank is visible crossing the first, running from TL 8769 8762 to TL 8793 2875, and this is equally blurred and difficult to be certain of, as is a third, narrower bank, to the south. The earthwork ditch feature in the corner of the field, centred on TL 8798 8757, is clearer, but may relate to an agricultural rather than archaeological feature. Not all the features show on all of the photographs, therefore a composite picture has been built up from the available photographs. It is possible that these features are related to the possible medieval earthworks to the west at Chapel Farm (NHER 54494) and/or the linear bank feature visible to the south (NHER 54584).
A undated skeleton (NHER 35406) was recovered in the area, but at the time of excavation no archaeological features were recorded.
E. Bales (NMP), 18 October 2010.
