Map

October 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two searchlight and/or gun emplacement is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-S6) on land to the east of the Brandon to Thetford Railway line at Two Mile Bottom, Thetford.
The site is centred on TL 8573 8676, and exhibits a large excavated area to the north which is likely to have been a quarry related to the Vitriol and Manure works (NHER 6531) to the west, depicted on historic maps (S7-S8). A number of possible practice trenches are also visible to the south of the quarry, although all these features show most clearly on the 1947 photographs and have therefore been recorded with a note of caution.
The site is now occupied by the Thetford Rugby Club, and has been ploughed level.
It is also worth noting that a World War Two pillbox has been recorded in the area (NHER 32692), although this was not visible on the available aerial photographs.
E. Bales (NMP), 18 Oct 2010.
