Full Description
October 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch and curvilinear ditch features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs on land to the north and south of Sugarhill Covert, Croxton.
The possible ring ditch is centred on TL 8624 8719. It is roughly circular, and measures approximately 34m in external diameter, 25m in internal diameter. It appears to exhibit two internal ditch features, each measuring approximately 20m in length by up to 6m in width. It may represent a former Bronze Age burial mound, although it is also possible that it represents a post medieval extraction pit, which is not depicted on the historic maps of the area.
There are a great many geological cropmarks visible in the area, but at least two of these were felt to be possibly archaeological, and have been mapped in the field to the approximately 300m to the north of the possible ring ditch. They are, however, quite likely to be peri-glacial geological features, and should be viewed with caution.
