A sequence of palaeoenvironmental deposits are visible on Titchwell Beach at low tide.
The lowest known deposit is a mud containing flint and chalk gravels. Palaleolithic/Mesolithic flint artefacts have been found on its the surface (see HER 22810). The mud is overlain by a thin basal freshwater peat (the Lower Peat) dating from about 9000 BP. The Lower Peat is overlain by a sequence of intertidal silty clays that developed in estuarine and/or brackish conditions. Above these is an upper peat that formed in freshwater marsh and woodland.
Information from (S1).
The visible extent of the deposits was recorded in 2004 by the Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Contexts 571, 604 and 706). See report (S2) for further details.
