1970s or 1980s. Building Survey.
No 48 examined as part of Norwich Survey.
Three storey red brick block, two rooms deep. Late 18th century but much rebuilt and enlarged. Possibly built by Reverend Robert Parr in 1797. Undercroft dates to around 1400-1450. Two bay, brick vaulted crypt running east-west. Does not relate to ground plot above.
See record forms (S3) for further details including ground floor plan.
T.E. Miller (NLA), 3 November 2004.
This building and its undercroft are amongst those noted in thesis (S4), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. The undercroft (wrongly listed as lying beneath No 50 St Giles Street) is described as being positioned parallel to and on the street line and comprising two bays, each with double-order diagonal ribs.
July 2009. Building Survey.
Examination of the cellars beneath Nos 46 and 48 St Giles Street.
This investigation demonstrated that the cellars which contain medieval elements do not extend beyond the footprint of the listed buildings and therefore do not extend below the any of the modern extensions. The cellars under number 48 St Giles Street contains two bays with medieval quadripartite ribbed vaults under the front part of the building and brick barrel vaulted cellars under the rear dating to the 1790s rebuilding of the house. The cellars under 46 St Giles Street (NHER 26191) have later flat ceilings but the walls contain brick arched recesses probably dating to the late medieval period. None of the currently open cellars under the St Giles Street range would appear to be those found in 1961.
See report (S5) for further details. This survey is also noted in (S6).
S. Howard (NLA), 8 January 2010.
November 2010. Trial Trenching.
Trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology East at the back of 46-48 Giles Street.
See report (S7) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S8).
S. Lobel (HES), 31 July 2015.
