Summary

A large World War Two military training area is visible on aerial photographs on Kilverstone, East Wretham and Roudham Heath. The site consists of numerous small weapons pits and practice trenches forming an extensive military training area as well as a possible pillbox. There are also a number of possible trackways visible as parchmarks and cropmarks, which may also relate to military activity, as they appear relatively freshly abraded in 1946, but it is possible that they are earlier features, and may relate to medieval to post-medieval trackways.

Map

November 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A large World War Two military training area is visible on aerial photographs on Kilverstone, East Wretham and Roudham Heath (S1-S5). The site is centred on TL 9113 8759 and consists of numerous small weapons pits and practice trenches forming an extensive military training area. The trefoil-shaped earthworks of a searchlight emplacement are visible to the south of the area, along with numerous military training features (NHER 53456), and this site may be a continuation of this training area to the south. There is also a possible pillbox, centred on TL 9028 8742, although this is only visible on one set of photographs, from 1975 (S7).
There are also a number of possible trackways visible on aerial photographs (S1-S6) as parchmarks and cropmarks, centred on TL 9104 8762 which may also relate to military activity, as they appear relatively freshly abraded in 1946, but it is possible that they are earlier features, and may relate to medieval to post-medieval trackways. Further cropmarks of trackways are visible, centred on TL 9035 8726.
