Summary

1946 aerial photographs revealed the earthworks of a possible enclosure. It is likely that this represents a post-medieval possible sheep pen, and is similar in appearance to another earthwork enclosure to the west (NHER 33904).

Map

November 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible fragmentary rectangular enclosure is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1-S3) on land to the southwest of Ringmere, on Croxton Heath. It is centred on TL 9061 8751 and it measures 133m by 89m internally, 140m by 96m externally. It is not visible on the historic maps of the area, but is likely to represent a post medieval stock enclosure. It may be related to another earthwork enclosure on a similar alignment just over 50m to the west (NHER 33904). Ephemeral earthworks of possible 'sheep locks' depicted on a reconstruction of Fousoe's map of 1742 (S4) are also visible approximately 300m to the east (S3), but are less convincing, and have not been mapped.
It is crossed by several earthwork tracks, from north to south, and appears to contain a possible smaller square enclosure, centred on approximately TL 9062 8754, and measuring 23m by 20m internally (S3).
E. Bales (NMP), 05 November 2010.
