Full Description
February 2011. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of hollowed trackway or broad boundary ditch of probable medieval to post medieval date is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) to the east of the Laundry Belt, Brettenham. The site is centred on TL 9382 8245. The Ordnance Survey first edition map (1889 to 1891) (S3) indicates that this track or boundary ran across what was known as ‘Rivett’s Heath’ and is depicted as ‘Rushford Common Field’ on Faden’s map of 1797. This possible track running across this area is located to the immediate north of an old trackway (ploughed up in 1907), the date of which is unknown but could be assumed to be at least medieval to post medieval in date (NHER 5969). This new section of track may have originally led towards the road to the north, which skirts the perimeter of Shadwell Park (NHER 29366) and a large area of medieval manorial, settlement and agricultural remains (NHER 6088, 54568 and 54565).
S. Horlock (NMP), 02 February 2011.
