Full Description
The earliest directory reference for this site is from 1846, registering John Harvey as 'Blacksmith'. He was also later registered as an agricultural machinery maker. The foundry supplied forges to Harvey's garage in Hethersett, and iron work for Hethersett church. The buildings are of brick and flint construction with 2 floors, including 1st floor loading bay and iron window frames. The site was recorded by NIAS in 1972 in a state of near dereliction. The site was demolished shortly afterwards for housing development. The site is visible on the 1st edition ordnance survey map (S2) marked as 'Smithy', dating the site to as early as 1824. It also appears on the RAF 1946 VAP series. In an image from Google Street View, there appears to be a wall in the exact same position of the south wall of the foundry (right near the same telegraph pole in the NIAS photos) made from brick and flint (S3). The pattern of construction is different, however it could possibly be built of material reclaimed from the foundry.
