Monitoring of groundworks associated with creation of sunken path and associated retaining wall.
A substantial ditch of probable medieval date was revealed, which may be the precursor to the church boundary and/or roadway. An area of unmarked graves associated with the church (NHER 7474) were also discovered close to the south-west corner of the cottage. The graves contained the remains of wooden coffins and included the burial of a young child and this areas appears to have been disturbed during the construction of the cottages in the late 17th century and also in the early 20th century. Soil alongside the cottage contained late Victorian to early 20th century domestic rubbish with arefacts including a bone handled toothbrush, glass bottles, a miniature doll's chamber pot and various sherds of Victorian ceramics.
