Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2025 recorded only a small number of ditches, none of which produced any finds. One does though correspond with a former field boundary shown on a 19th-century map, with the majority of the other ditches being similarly-aligned features that were also most likely post-medieval in date.

February 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Field 3; Trenches 35-54).
The 20 trenches excavated at this location revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only a small number of ditches recorded. None of these ditches produced any dating evidence, although one north-north-east to south-south-west aligned feature was likely associated with a former field boundary shown on the Wereham Tithe map (S1). All but one of the other ditches were also aligned north-north-east to south-south-west and unlikely to have been of great antiquity. A sample taken from one of these features contained waterlogged plant remains, along with a limited amount of charcoal and fragments of charred culm nodes and stem fragments.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2026.
