Full Description
August 2010. Trial Trenching and Contour Survey.
Contour survey and evaluation of site on proposed pipeline route.
A large east to west orientated earthwork on the north-western edge of Kimberley Park was examined and found to be the remains of a medieval sub-surface ditch. The profile of the ditch and the nature of finds recovered, which included 12th century horseshoe nails and knives, could indicate that this was a medieval toft. This is one of the features recorded under NHER 54661.
This work also revealed an Early Neolithic pit and a gully that was possibly of a similar age. A stakehole in the base of the pit is too small to be structural and may have acted as a marker post or the pit could have served a ritual purpose.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2010.345).
