Map

The Norwich Gas Company bought this 5 acre plot to build works to "supply the whole city with coal gas" c.1830.
This was connected to around 12 miles of pipelines which supplied some 900 gas lamps across the city.
There was a large gas production plant and 2 large gasometers for storing and distributing the gas. The site was damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt in 1951. The plant is clearly visible on the 1st edition ordnance survey map 1820-30 (S1). The site was subject to nationalisation in 1948. The site is now apartment blocks.
