Summary

In March 2010 a geophysical survey revealed a number of linear anomalies that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. A discrete anomaly represents an infilled pond depicted on one of these maps and a small L-shaped anomaly to the south possibly represents the remains of a stock pen. Limited trial trenching in the south-west corner of field site in 2025 uncovered post-medieval and undated ditches and a number of fairly unremarkable pits of uncertain age.

Map

March 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 19).
A number of linear anomalies correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Attleborough tithe map of 1838 (S1) and the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map (S2). A triangular pond visible on the latter is still present on modern maps and to the south of this a small L-shaped anomaly is possibly the remains of a stock pen associated with the 19th century field system. Two small elongated positive anomalies are likely to be pits although they could also be of geological origin.
A number of weak parallel anomalies are probably the remains of field drains.
A particularly pronounced north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly was caused by a modern gasline pipeline and what appear to be a smaller pipe may have been associated with a military camp that occupied part of this site during the World War Two (NHER 9235).
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).

March-April 2025.
Evaluation of site of proposed new roundabout in south-west corner of field.
The 11 trenches excavated revealed only a number of scattered pits and ditches, which produced few finds. A north-east to south-west aligned ditch and an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch to the south did though both correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Attleborough tithe map (S1). Finds from these features included a post-medieval/modern pottery sherd, post-medieval roof tile fragments and oyster shells. A perpendicular ditch running between these features contained a post-medieval bottle and therefore likely represented another element of the same field system.
The small number of undated linear features included a north-west to south-east aligned ditch in the south-west corner of the area examined.
The probable pits recorded were all undated and fairly unremarkable - the most notable being a feature at the southern edge of the site that contained a number of burnt flints.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 August 2025.
