Summary

A geophysical survey undertaken in 2010 identified a number of linear anomalies, the majority of which correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. Notable exceptions include an irregular group of linear anomalies in a triangular configuration at the centre of the site, which may well represent earlier features. Limited trial trenching in 2015 identified a single ditch that corresponded with one of the late post-medieval field boundaries.

Map

March 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 20).
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, the majority of which correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Attleborough tithe map of 1838 (S1) or the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map (S2). Notable exceptions include an irregular group of linear anomalies in a triangular configuration at the centre of the site, which may well represent earlier features.
A large discrete anomaly in the south-east corner of the site corresponds with a former pond depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map.
Much of the central part of the site was dominated by broad and diffuse anomalies though to represent some form of change in the underlying geology.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
S. Howard (HES), 29 June 2011. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 28 February 2022.

August-September 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development area (Trenches 49 and A).
The two trenches excavated at this location revealed a single east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch. This corresponded with both a geophysical anomaly and a former field boundary depicted on the Attleborough tithe map (S1).
No unstratified finds were recovered.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
