Summary

Evidence of a group of possible World War Two structures, presumably relating to military activity and/or civil defence, is visible as structures and concrete footings on aerial photographs. On photographs taken in 1946 the concrete building platforms for five small rectangular structures are visible arrayed at intervals along the hedgelines. An additional structure, with the curved profile typical of military huts, is visible extant against the southeast field boundary; a smaller structure of uncertain form and purpose is also visible closer to the centre of the field. The function of the buildings is unclear, but the fact that in 1946 they had been recently removed, together with the form of the structures and their layout, is suggestive of a temporary military or defensive site associated with the recent war. A similar group of structures has also been recorded 375m to the northwest (NHER 54644).

Evidence of a group of possible World War Two structures, presumably relating to military activity and/or civil defence, is visible as structures and concrete footings on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 1086 0200. On photographs taken in 1946 the concrete building platforms for five small rectangular structures are visible arrayed at intervals along the hedgelines. An additional structure, with the curved profile typical of military huts, is visible extant against the southeast field boundary (at TG 1085 0198); a smaller structure of uncertain form and purpose is also visible closer to the centre of the field (at TG 1085 0200). The function of site is unclear; the structural remains recorded at TG 1091 1201 could relate to structures depicted here on an historic map (S3), while the curved-profile structure was still extant in 1964 (S4). However, the fact that in 1946 most of the structures had been recently removed, together with the form of the structures (which would have been the size of a typical military hut) and their siting along the hedgeline, is suggestive of a temporary military or defensive site associated with the recent war. They are unlikely to represent air raid shelters as they are located some distance from any large groups of people, whether at residential or industrial sites. A similar group of structures has also been recorded 375m to the northwest (NHER 54644).
