Full Description
July 2011. Assessment based on aerial photograph of Westfield Old Hall.
House of around 1700, demolished about 1980.
The house is of colour-washed brick with pantile roofs. Perhaps the most diagnostic feature of the house is its steeply pitched hipped roof which is characteristic of Restoration to Queen Anne country houses (1660-1714).
To the north-east of the farmhouse were extensive farm buildings which were clearly mainly for stock and included shelter sheds, stables, loose boxes and bullock yards.
See (S1) for further information.
S. Heywood (HES), 28 July 2011.
August 2011.
According to the current landowner the house was not demolished but in fact burnt down following a fire which started in the adjacent agricultural buildings.
Rubble and architectural fragments from the building including a fragment of Victorian marble fireplace were inspected by the HES. These were recovered following ploughing of the field.

The landowner says the house burnt down in 1967.

October 2012.
Field visit in order to mark out the site of the Old Hall, using GPS and coordinates taken from S2. The site is currently in arable and had recently been drilled with a new crop. The site does not fall within the field corner which is currently managed under Environmental Stewardship therefore it is not likely to be removed from cultivation.
K. Powell (HES), 7 January 2014
