The area of Holt Lowes was used as an army training base after World War One and World War Two. There have been a number of ordnance finds over the whole site including two three-inch mortars and tail fins (see S1). Military features include trenches and banks dating from World War One (NHER 53185), a horseshoe shaped banked enclosure, which may be a World War One gun emplacement (NHER 53184), a complex of partially in-filled slit trenches and shallow depressions believed to date from World War One (NHER 53093), three extraction pits or possible military remains (NHER 53092), and rifle butts (NHER 49708).
