June 2011. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The excavation revealed evidence for Romano-British occupation comprising two ditches and two postholes with associated finds including a single Roman coin of the emperor Gratian (AD 367-383), pottery, animal bone, oyster shell, ceramic building material, fired clay and nails. During the work the owners of 21 Churchill Estate, whose garden backs onto the eastern boundary of the site, brought forward sherds of large greyware vessels and fine wares collected from their garden. A small number of burnt flint and two flint flakes are probably of prehistoric date.
