NHER 56076 (Monument record) - Large pit of probable post-medieval date

Summary

During a rapid earthwork identification survey a large pit was noted at this location. Cartographic sources suggest that it was probably open during the second half of the 19th century. The pit is visible as an earthwork on recent (2015) visualised lidar data.

Rapid Earthwork Identification Survey (Compartment 2039).
A large pit measuring 30m in diameter is probably a former marl or gravel pit. This pit was probably open during the late 19th century as it appears to correspond with a feature marked on the 1st Edition O.S 6" map.

A large pit of probable post medieval date is seen as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S2). This feature most likely relates to an extraction pit and has not been mapped as part of this survey, as the feature is recorded in good detail on the Frist and Second edition Ordnance Survey maps (S3-S4).
