Summary

The earthwork of an undated pit was identified during a rapid earthwork identification survey. Although the locational information available from the survey is approximate, it is likely that the pit is the same as that visible as an earthwork 75m to the southwest on imagery from a 2015 lidar survey. It is possible that it is a marl pit.

February 1998. Walkover Survey.
Rapid Earthwork Identification Survey (Compartment 6063).
Large circular pit 50m in diameter, 2.5m deep not marked on the 1 inch First Edition Ordnance Survey map (1836). It is possible that this is a marl pit.
See report (S1) for further details.
The location of this pit has been captured as Context 1.
S. Howard (HES), 5 September 2011. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 19 August 2015. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 1 February 2021.

March 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The undated pit, possibly a marl pit, described above is probably the same as that visible as an earthwork 75m to the southwest on imagery from a 2015 lidar survey (S2). However, due to the slight uncertainty, the Monument polygon has been extended to include both locations [1]. The pit is obscured by plantation cover on the most recent aerial photographs consulted by the project, but given the recent date of the lidar survey it is likely that the earthwork still survives.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 15 March 2019.
