Full Description
November 2010. Trial Trenching.
The earliest deposits encountered in the southern area of the site appear to be a possible late medieval make-up or levelling layer comprising pebble and brick or tile fragments, a wall foundation and the remains of what might have been a large well. A possible quarry pit was recorded in the northern area of the site which had been truncated by a later well. The walls of an early medieval masonry structure built from flint and lime mortar were revealed. A medieval destruction layer was observed in the northern area of the site with the robbing and infilling of the structure. Small quantities of 11th to 14th century pottery and late 12th to 13th century pottery was recovered. A later medieval well sub-circular in plan has been truncated by modern features and contained two pieces of ?15th century painted glass.
The post-medieval deposits overlying the demolished wall and partly infilling the possible well appears to be a second demolition layer containing small pebbles, chalk flecks and small fragments of brick or tile. There is also a post-medieval 'garden' soil and number of pits.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
