Summary

A rapid earthwork identification survey in 2011 revealed a series of circular depressions arranged in a line which are likely to be former extraction pits. Aerial photographs and imagery from a lidar survey flown in 2015 has confirmed this interpretation, and demonstrated that rather than being three separate pits, the earthworks are conjoined. No quarry is marked here on late 19th and early 20th century Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting that the extraction took place in the modern period.

Map

August 2011. Walkover Survey.

S. Howard (HES), 16 September 2011.

February 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
An area of extraction or quarrying, probably of modern date, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, such as (S2), and imagery from a lidar survey (S3). Its location corresponds with that of the three extraction pits described above. It is not depicted on either the Ordnance Survey First Edition 6-inch map (S4), or the Second Edition 25-inch map (S5), and is probably of modern date. It has not been transcribed but the mapped extent of this site has been amended to reflect the feature visible on the lidar imagery [1].
