Summary

Metal-detecting between 2010 and 2011 recovered Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon and Late Saxon pottery sherds as well as coins and metal objects dating from the Late Bronze Age to the post-medieval periods. Large quantities of Roman coins; Iron Age, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval tokens and a post-medieval jetton were found. Other metal finds include Late Bronze Age awls and a fragment of knife blade; Late Iron Age brooches and a harness mount; Late Iron Age/Roman and Roman brooches; a Roman penannular snake finger-ring, fragments of snake and three-strand cable bracelet, a finger-ring made from an undecorated fragment of bracelet, military harness mounts and a fragment of figurine depicting the lower end of a human leg and foot; Roman/Early Saxon belt mounts and strap-ends; Early Saxon dress accessories and a fragment of bird's head mount terminal and copper alloy strips possibly from a stave-built wooden bucket; Early/Middle Saxon mounts; Middle Saxon dress accessories including silver, biconical, polyhedral and globular headed pins and mounts including an enamel-inlaid example probably from a hanging bowl; Middle/Late Saxon lead weights and dress accessories including animal-head strap-ends; Late Saxon iron and lead weights and jewellery including a gold finger-ring with pellet and filigree decoration; medieval dress accessories, jewellery, zoomorphic sword or dagger chapes, the rim sherd of a censer-cover and belt or harness mounts in the form of a griffin passant to dexter and a lion passant guardant; a medieval/post-medieval writing lead, thimble, lead weight and fragment of sheet strainer or sieve; post-medieval dress accessories, harness mounts, a hooked sword belt mount and a fragment of iron knife and an undatable silver ingot-like object and a piece of silver metalworking debris.

Late Iron Age/Roman, Roman, Roman/Early Saxon, Early Saxon, Early/Middle Saxon, Middle Saxon (S6)-(S7), Middle/Late Saxon, Late Saxon (S8)-(S9), Late Saxon/medieval, medieval (S10)-(S11), medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval metal objects (including 2 Middle/Late Saxon silver strap ends and a Late Saxon gold finger ring).
The Middle/Late Saxon silver strap ends and the Late Saxon gold finger ring were reported as potential Treasure (Treasure cases 2011 T369 and 2011 T388 respectively). The gold finger ring was declared Treasure at inquest 31 on October 2011 and subsequently acquired by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2012.317).

Late Bronze Age (S12), Late Iron Age, Late Iron Age/Roman, Roman, Roman/Early Saxon, Early Saxon (S13), Middle Saxon, Middle/Late Saxon (S14), Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval, post-medieval and undatable metal objects.
A number of these objects were submitted as potential Treasure, including a Middle/Late Saxon silver sheet blunt-hooked tag, a Middle/Late Saxon sheet silver hooked tag and a post-medieval gilt silver sheet belt mount or stud (Refs: 2012 T100, 2012 T137 and 2012 T99 respectively). The Middle/Late Saxon blunt-hooked tag was declared Treasure at inquest and acquired by the British Museum (2013,8024.1). The blunt-hooked tag has since been reidentifed as post-medieval in date, probably 17th century, by H. Geake (HES) in February 2023.
