Full Description
No. 1 Chapel Street Cromer is one of a pair of cottages thought to date to the early 19th century which at some point in the late 19th century or early 20th century underwent conversion to form a shop with accommodation above. The applicant refers to the building being shown on the a Tithe map of 1845, and it appears on the Ordnance Survey map edition of 1887, at which time both sides of Chapel Street appear as fully developed frontages. Subsequent map editions of 1906, 1928 and 1938 show much the same picture, but now with a passage within the north end of the building giving access to a rear yard, to the west of which are shown other buildings. At the front of the passage, an area of the ceiling has an embossed `Lincrusta' type finish which matches an area of ceiling enclosed within present shop. The date of the change of use of the ground floor to a shop is not known, but the applicant refers to `Savin's History of Cromer' of 1936 which notes `a shop front recently put in'. This may refer to the insertion of a new shop front to replace an earlier frontage, as the passage giving access to the rear yard and its buildings appears to pre-date the 1930's shop front. Both the shop front and the accommodation above extend over the passage to abut the building to the north of the passage. The present arrangement of shop with accommodation above appears to be unchanged from the time of the insertion of the existing shop front.

In October 2010 an application to have the cottages listed was submitted, but it was determined that although the building was of modest architectural interest that it lacks significant external details or constructional characteristics. The building had also undergone significant alterations, both externally and internally, which required remodelling and as such none of the original fixtures and fittings have remained.
