Full Description
26 August 2010. Stray Find.
A pebble hammer or macehead with a central perforation of an hour glass shape was recovered as a surface find. They are difficult to date, as few have been found associated with other, datable objects. It is possible that they were made as early as the Late Mesolithic period and as late as the Early Bronze Age i.e. c.6000 – c.2000 BC. The present example is made of a stone exotic to Norfolk, suggesting that it is either made on a glacial erratic or that it has been imported from a distant source. This example has most probably been used as a hammer as the stone is battered and flattened at one end. Other possible uses are as a weight on a digging stick or as a weapon.
See description in file.
