Map

A number of practice trenches possibly dating to World War One, as indicated by their crennelated form. These are also visible on the 1946 RAF aerial photographs. A World War One bayonet was recovered from one of the trenches by the owner.
S. Howard (HES), 7 December 2011.

The date of the bayonet is non-diagnostic - the SMLE Mk III and 18" bayonet was issued to British troops from 1907 to 1941.
K. Hamilton (HES,) 19 October 2012.

It is possible that these trenches may have been dug by Kitchener recruits. Apparently young volunteers waiting to go to France trained by digging trenches whilst waiting. Local landowners like the Hare family often made their land available for this. That would explain why the MoD used this land over two World Wars but never officially owned it (S1).
Or, alternatively, might these trenches have been dug to train air crew in the recognition of such features from above?
D. Gurney (HES), 12 November 2012.

2014.
At least some of these practice trenches are still extant features. The landowner [1] initially thought that they were just drainage ditches but reported them to Norfolk County Council upon realising that they were potentially of interest. Subsequent clearance of leaf mould demonstrated that the trenches are up to 2m deep. This work also revealed a circular feature with two entrances believed to be some form of command centre.
