Full Description
Milestone marking Norwich 10 miles and Watton 11 miles and also incorporating an Ordnance Survey benchmark. One of 16 surviving milestones along the former Norwich-Watton turnpike. The turnpike was established in 1770 and ran along the city walls from St Stephen's Gate to St Giles' Gate in Norwich and then to the windmill in Watton. It lasted for 100 years.
Unlike the others in this series between Norwich and Scoulton, this milestone is a black painted stone with a semi-circular top and the town lettering arranged horizontally over the mile numbers.
(S1) includes details of this and other surviving milestones along this route.
D. Holburn (HES), 12 December 2011.
2010-2011. Repair work by the Milestone Society.
Milestone Society members removed the marker for repair work. It was thought if an earlier repair was left it would cause further cracks as the metal bands continued to expand. These bands were removed and replaced with resin bonding stainless threaded rods. Tar was removed and the marker was painted. Once repaired this marker was re-set in its original position.
Information from survey form (S2) and photographs (S3).
H. Mellor (HES), 23 May 2018.
The base section, almost half of the stone, is currently in store (see Notes).
D. Gurney (HES), 28 January 2015.
August 2016.
The unused base section has been moved to the NCC Highways Depot at Ketteringham. See photo.
D. Gurney (HES), 09 August 2016.
